What's an each way bet and how do I place this?

What's an Each Way bet?

An Each Way bet consists of two (2) bets on the same selection - one for the winner of the event and the other for the selection to place.

The place terms vary depending on the sporting event and number of participants (we'll display these terms on the bet slip for your information at the time of placing a bet).

Sample bet details:

  • Stake: £10.00 Each Way
  • Total stake: £20.00
  • Odds/price: 12/1
  • Each Way odds: 1/4
  • Paying up to: 4 places/4th placer
  • If your horse finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th:
    • The win part is losing but the place part is winning at a price of 3/1 [(12/1)(1/4) = 12/4 = 3/1]
    • Your returns will be (10 x 3) £30.00 winnings + £10.00 stake = £40.00
  • If your horse wins the event:
    • Both win and place parts will be paid out.
    • You'll receive the £40.00 for your place bet and (10 x 12) £120.00 winnings + £10.00 stake = £130.00 for the win part.
    • Your total returns will be £170.00.

Each Way multiples

Each Way multiple bets such as doubles, trebles, etc. are settled as two distinct bets.

This means that the win parts of each selection are multiplied together and the place parts of each selection are multiplied together.

Example: A £5 Each Way double with a total stake of £10 struck on two horses each priced at 4/1 in a six runner non-handicap would return £145 if both horses win. This is because:

£5 win double at 4/1 and 4/1 = £125

First selection (4 x the £5 stake plus the £5 stake returned = £25) invested onto the second selection (4 x the £25 stake plus the £25 stake returned = £125)

£5 place double at 4/1 and 4/1 = £20

First selection (1/4 of 4 x the £5 stake plus the £5 stake returned = £10) invested onto the second selection (1/4 of 4 x the £10 stake plus the £10 stake returned = £20)

A £5 Each Way double with a total stake of £10 struck on two horses each priced at 4/1 in a six runner non-handicap would return £20 if one horse wins and the other is placed. This is because:

£5 win double – losing bet

£5 place double at 4/1 and 4/1 = £20

First selection (1/4 of 4 x the £5 stake plus the £5 stake returned = £10) invested onto the second selection (1/4 of 4 x the £10 stake plus the £10 stake returned = £20)

NOTE: If your selection is involved in a "dead heat" with another selection, your bet will be subject to "dead heat rules" here.
