How We Use Your Data For Marketing

What types of marketing do we do?

We like to share promotions and benefits of playing safely with William Hill with our customers. Our existing customers and potential future customers see our promotions and benefits online and through email, text messages, and push notifications. This is commonly known as ‘direct marketing’.

We want our promotions and benefits to be relevant to the person that is receiving them, which is why we personalise them. This process, known as 'personalisation,' tailors offers based on your preferences and past interactions. For example, if you’ve previously placed a bet on a football team, we’ll send you promotions and benefits related to sports betting or that specific team

Please see below for more information about our direct and personalised marketing activities.

Direct Marketing

Subject to your consent preferences, we use your personal data to deliver general and personalised marketing communications to you across various channels, such as email, SMS, push notifications, and onsite messages.

We do this to inform you about products, services, promotions and special offers which we think may be of interest to you.

You can update your marketing preferences and also opt-out at any time in your account settings. We also include unsubscribe features in our email and SMS communications which you can use to opt-out of future marketing communications. Opting out can take up to 28 days to take effect. If you opt-out of marketing on one brand this does not affect your preferences on any other brands within the Evoke plc group (which include William Hill and 888 in the UK).

In addition to changing your preferences within your account, you can also opt out of receiving Directing Marketing via specific channels as follows:

  • Email or SMS:  All email and SMS marketing messages you receive will include instructions on how to unsubscribe from future communications.

  • Push messages: Most applications also allow you to control push notifications in your device settings. For example, when you first download one of our betting applications on iOS, you will be asked to allow or block notifications from our application. Please refer to your browser or device settings for full details.

Please remember that even if you opt out of receiving Direct Marketing, we may still get in touch to send service messages – these are important communications related to our Services, such as changes to our Terms and Conditions.

Personalised Marketing

To provide you with content that is more likely to be interesting to you, we look at what we know about you to build a picture of what you’re most likely to want to hear about. We do this for both our direct marketing communications and online advertising.

We use information from your online behaviour and activity to understand your preferences and determine which offers and products are best suited to you, and to customers similar to you. Such information may include your betting and gaming history, your age, gender, geographic location, social media presence (if applicable) and how you interact with us.

For example, if your activity shows that your online preference is poker, we will aim to primarily send you marketing material relating to poker.

We also combine this with trusted public information sources – such as postcode and information available from the Office of National Statistics (“ONS”) - or commercially available data sources – such as information made available to us through social media companies and data aggregators such as Credit Reference Agencies (but not including credit reports) about the things people with similar characteristics to you (in terms of age, gender, location etc.) tend to be interested in so we can ensure the offers we present to you are as relevant as possible.

The below apply to the type of personalised online marketing we do, based upon your profile, to send you offers and communications.

1. Social Media Marketing

We use your personal data to carry out paid advertising campaigns on social media websites such as FaceBook and X. If you have not opted out of social media marketing we share some hashed information with these companies, such as your email address, to match personal information they hold to display advertisements to you whilst you browse on their platform. Hashing is a security measure which transforms data into a string of numbers or letters and cannot be reversed. These advertisements are based upon audiences created within the social media platform and are built around what we think you might be interested in, and your preferences. Sometimes these audiences can include people who are not our customers but share similar characteristics on the social media platform to you.

You can change your social media data sharing preferences via your customer account settings or by contacting customer services. You can also select adverts that you do not wish to see by selecting the relevant preference in your social media platform of choice.

You can also refer to the privacy notices of the specific social networking platforms you use for further information on how their advertising services use your personal data.

2. Online Advertising including cookies

Cookies, pixels, Software Development Kits (SDKs) and other trackers gather information from your activities on websites and mobile applications to help provide us with insights. These technologies help to create a profile about you and are used by many companies including companies that do not offer betting and gaming products.

We use our profile of you to help show you relevant offers and promotions across our website and app as well as other websites which are approved for us to promote our services. Types of personalised online marketing including promotional banners, on and off site, pop-up messages when logged into your account, imagery, polls and quizzes.

To provide you with this type of personalised content we segment you and other customers into audiences based on similarity of customer profiles and send specific communications relevant to your activity as well as your proven and inferred interests.  We aim to tailor these communications to you so we can provide the best customer experience and ensure you are given access to the products best suited to you.

We also allow trusted third-party suppliers (e.g. advertising companies) to place cookies and similar technologies on our website, some of which are used to show adverts and promotions which they consider relevant to you as you browse the internet. Cookies, web trackers, SDKs, and pixels are technologies which provide advertising and analytics and allow us to show you relevant offers and promotions. To do this, these technologies use a combination of information including, but not limited to, your email address, IP address, username, device identifiers, and activity when you use our platform.

This type of advertising technology also allows us and our trusted third-party suppliers – as outlined in our Cookie Notice - to know whether you have seen an advert (or a type of advert), and how long it has been since you have last seen it. This information is used to help tailor the adverts you see, and to measure the effectiveness of adverts. We can also use information from one device to help personalise your experience on another device.

You can control the use of cookies and opt out of personalised content and relevant offers via our onsite Cookie Banner which you will see when you first visit our site. You can also disable third-party cookies through your internet browser. For further information on the types of cookies we use please visit our Cookie Policy.

Opting out of marketing

All our e-mail and SMS communications include an option to unsubscribe. Additionally, you can unsubscribe at any time by logging into your account and adjusting your settings or by contacting us via live chat.

There may be cases where we suspend marketing communications to an account, even if you have provided consent.  Where a customer’s behaviour indicates a risk, our systems will automatically trigger a suppression of marketing materials to prevent potential gambling related harm. These suppressions will override your preferences and are in line with our regulatory and licensing obligations.
