How can I improve the security of my account?
William Hill takes the securing of your personal and payment information very seriously indeed. We employ sophisticated solutions to provide security and fraud protection for our customers. There are also a number of steps you can take to make your account even more secure. The key areas are:
Passwords and Security Questions
Your username and password protect your account from unauthorised access. Set a complex password or passphrase that you can easily remember, never write it down, or share it, not even with us. Don't use a dictionary word, and use a combination of letters and numbers.
When contacting Customer Services the answers to your security question is used in conjunction with other account information to identify you as the account holder. So it needs to be difficult to guess and not something that can be discovered from social media sites such as Facebook. Why not try setting your security question to the 'Mother's Maiden Name' of your partner or best friend's mum? Even the most determined individual would struggle to guess that answer.
Being aware of the techniques that may be used by Cyber-criminals to trick you out of your sensitive information can be a great help in keeping your details safe. William Hill will never ask you for your account password.
Be aware of email addresses that you recognise but appear to have content not associated with this contact; William Hill sending you a link to an online Pharmacy for example. The vast majority of phishing email attacks (where fraudsters send fake emails, social network posts and texts) use forged email email addresses.
- Unrecognisable email addresses pose an even greater risk if they contain attachments. Always be aware when opening attachments from email senders you do not recognise as it is possible that they may contain malware (malicious software including viruses etc.) which could infect your PC.
- Use of bad spelling and grammar could also indicate that an email may not be genuine and should be treated with absolute caution.
- When visiting websites it is always safer to do this by typing the site address into the browser address bar, rather than clicking links in emails.
Cyber-criminals use a variety of methods to install malicious software (Malware) on your device. This software allows the perpetrator to capture sensitive information, such as your username and password, as you type them in. The best defences against Malware are:
- Patching and updates: Keep your device, be it laptop - desktop - tablet - or mobile, up to date by installing the latest application and operating system updates.
- Anti-virus: Install one of the popular anti-virus solutions, and keep it updated.
- Be cautious about the links and popups you click on. If you're not sure about the origin of the link or popup, don't click it. Always think twice before installing software from untrusted sources.
